Chairman & Trustees, Demelza Hospice Care For Children

'High Profile Candidate With An OBE For Services To Disability Appointed As Chairman'

The Assignment

Demelza Hospice Care for Children provides respite care for children and young people with life limiting and threatening conditions. After our successful appointment of their Interim and Permanent CEO, we were requested to conduct the headhunt for their Chairman, an HR Trustee and a Retail Trustee, in order to present a more rounded Board of Trustees.

The Search

Attracting accomplished and experienced professionals with proven strategic experience required a targeted, search led recruitment campaign. We undertook a broad search to secure a Chairman with a high profile, non-executive background. As well as identifying candidates with specialist commercial retail and HR backgrounds, we targeted relevant individuals from the not for profit and public sectors.

The Appointment

Sarah Phillips was among four new Trustees elected at the AGM. She brings extensive experience across the private, public, and charity sectors. Specialist Trustees included Fiona Hoye, Director of HR at Warner Brothers Ltd. and Paul Denham, a highly experienced retailer having spent thirty years in senior positions with blue chip retail brands, including Marks and Spencer and The Co-operative Group. With an extensive list of high calibre candidates to choose from, Demelza appointed an additional Trustee to their Board, Gerard Collins, HR Director for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

Sales & Marketing Director, Youth Hostels Association (YHA)

'Charity Attracts Commercial Sector Marketeer'

The Assignment

YHA aims to reach out and improve the lives of young people through their diverse network of hostels in England and Wales. Following the rebranding, a need was recognised to more clearly align the brand and their charitable objectives. They required a Sales & Marketing Director who could raise brand awareness, drive growth and communicate YHA's mission.

The Search

Whilst commercial sector experience was not essential, the remit of the role required the team to focus on candidates with an understanding of the markets that YHA is competing in. This led to extensive searches for relevant individuals across hospitality, leisure and tourism, as well as youth focused sectors. Due to the flexibility of work location, we were also able to utilise our networks nationally. A number of appointable candidates were presented for short list, including a senior figure from an international entertainment corporation, the Managing Director of a leading hotel chain, and the Chief Executive of a regional tourism board.

The Appoinment

The successful candidate, Joe Lynch, possessed a wealth of relevant experience, including an extensive career in the education market for TUI Travel. His knowledge of the youth markets, national and international experience, and track record of raising brand awareness resulted in an exceptional appointment for YHA.

Director of Young People and Family Services, CATCH22

'Senior Public Sector Figure Appointed To Newly Created Strategic Role'

The Assignment

Catch22 is a unique charity with a social mission to help people in difficult situations transform their lives. Following the development of their Corporate Strategy 2012-15, a new role was created to supplement the Strategic Management Team. With our prior success in appointing their Assistant Director of Fundraising & Marketing, and following a competitive pitch process, we were retained to recruit a Director of Young People and Family Services.

The Search

Our search included targeting professionals working within the public sector, as well as social enterprises and private providers of people based services. Youth and children's charities were also a major point of focus. The candidates we were able to attract all worked in people oriented service provision at some point in their careers, and had held significant leadership roles. Short-listed candidates included a Director from a national children's charity, an Assistant Director in Commissioning and Strategic Planning of Children, Young People & Family Services from local government and a Director of Strategic Partnerships and Public Affairs from a social enterprise.

The Appoinment

The appointed candidate, Sally Morris, has a strong track record in young people's services, with over 20 years experience managing children and family social care contracts, service improvements and partnerships within local government. She has a strong commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable young people through evidence-based practice, and will ensure that young people and their emerging needs remain the focus of Catch22's work in this area.
