Head of Health Information

Purpose of the role

The person in this role has overall responsibility for leading and developing the charity's Health Information programmes, to help achieve their mission, helping people make informed lifestyle choices to reduce their cancer risk. The person will report directly to the CEO, and will work closely with other members of the UK Executive Management Team (EMT) and international branches.

Main duties and responsibilities

Staff management
- Overall responsibility for Health Information Department, with direct line management of the Health Information Publications Manager, Health Promotion Manager and Health Information Officer
- Motivating, leading, directing and inspiring the Health Information team, including recruitment, training and annual appraisals
- Strategic Planning and Budget Responsibilities
- Developing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing the departmental strategy to maximise impact and reach of our health information programmes.
- Ensuring THE CHARITY's health information strategy is aligned to the goals and objectives of the UK strategy.
- Overseeing departmental annual budget planning, regularly monitoring budgets and reporting on variance.
- Executive Management Team Responsibilities
- Ensuring the Head of THE CHARITY UK is kept informed of all key developments and that the agreed approval processes are observed.
- Regularly updating senior management on key developments in THE CHARITY UK health information programmes.
- Taking a proactive approach to working with the fundraising and communications teams to develop partnerships and relationships with companies, media outlets and other organization's to promote THE CHARITY UK's key messages in order to secure funding for new projects and media coverage for our work.
- Contributing to EMT meetings and other cross-departmental meetings and projects.
- Commenting on press releases and copy reviews for other departments as necessary.

Health information programmes
- Overall responsibility for health information programmes, targeted at general public, supporters, people living cancer and health professionals.
- Overall responsibility for the quality, accuracy and credibility of all of THE CHARITY UK's health information resources (on and offline) and cancer prevention web section.
- Directing the planning, development and delivery of all health information materials including newsletters, booklets, leaflets and health tools designed to educate THE CHARITY UK's various target audiences about dietary and lifestyle choices.
- Reviewing and ensuring our health information programmes and materials are up to date and in line with our Cancer Prevention Recommendations and public health guidelines
- Supporting the development of THE CHARITY UK's cancer prevention web section and online resources, ensuring information is regularly updated and KPIs met.
- Overseeing the strategic development of the supporter newsletter, ensuring it is a key vehicle for engaging and communicating with THE CHARITY UK's supporters.
- Review and access our health information programmes, to ensure we reach as many people with our cancer prevention messages as effectively as possible.
- Scoping new opportunities to expand our range of health information tool for people living with and beyond cancer

Networking and Policy
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge on relevant developments in cancer policy, public health promotion etc. and ensuring any important changes are acted on/implemented.
- Contribute to discussions and creation of strategy for policy work within the UK, contributing to policy consultations and campaigning and advocacy work.
- Remaining aware and up-to-date of new strategies and directions of like-minded UK organisations and bodies, particularly in relation to health promotion and health information, representing the organisation on various health alliances.
- Networking outside the organisation to raise THE CHARITY UK's profile, build useful contacts and develop new opportunities.
- Act as a media spokesperson for the organisation to raise awareness of our cancer prevention recommendation and impact on public health.

- Working constructively with colleagues to achieve health information and charitable objectives, and complying with THE CHARITY UK policies and procedures.
- Representing the charity as and when required and promoting the work and programmes of THE CHARITY UK.
- Participating in and making positive contributions at team and other THE CHARITY UK meetings.
- Keeping fully abreast of developments in the sector and the activities of other charitable organisations, to identify new opportunities for THE CHARITY UK.
- Undertaking any other tasks as directed by the Head of THE CHARITY UK

Person Specification
- Significant experience of managing a range of health information or health promotion programmes, ideally within a charity environment
- Experience in managing programmes in two or more of the following areas: supporter newsletters, health professionals, health education for the general public
- Proven experience of leading and managing a team (including setting objectives, motivating staff, performance management) and strong team-building skills
- Proven experience in creating and managing a budget
- Proven experience in setting and achieving targets
- Experience of project evaluating to determine progress, success and impact
- Proven experience of giving presentations and leading meetings
- Excellent networking skills and the ability to engage a range of different contacts and audiences
- Editorial experience of developing health information in different formats
- Understanding or experience of marketing
- Able and confident public speaker
- Ability to think strategically about developing health information programmes and able to convert strategy into tactical plans
- Ability to operate at a senior level
- Ability to handle a busy workload, manage multiple activities, meet tight deadlines and priorities effectively
- Ability to produce concise, well-constructed written communications for a variety of audiences/formats and an excellent attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills with ability to present verbally in a clear and persuasive manner
- Ability to proficiently perform moderately complex tasks using software packages such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- An interest in and commitment to a healthy lifestyle, health promotion and health related organisations and nutrition
- Willingness to work flexibly as needed the post may require occasional evening and/or weekend work
- Educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally in communications, health promotion, nutrition or similar qualification
