Head of Policy and Campaigns

Job description

Harris Hill are delighted to be working with Liberty to recruit a Head of Policy and Campaigns.

Liberty is an independent membership organisation which challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to make sure everyone in the UK is treated fairly. We are campaigners, lawyers, journalists and policy experts who work together to protect rights and hold the powerful to account. We empower others to defend their own rights and the rights of their family, friends and communities. Our principles are guided by evidence and expertise - not political agenda, profit or popular opinion. We're not afraid to speak uncomfortable truths or confront intolerance and abuse of power wherever we find it. Together we've been making the UK a fairer, more equal place since 1934.

Today, Liberty's work is needed more than ever, and there's never been a more pivotal time to join us. The Human Rights Act is facing repeal, protest rights are under attack and the Government (regardless of who the next Prime Minister is) is intent on removing accountability and hiding from scrutiny.

Our Head of Policy and Campaigns will develop and implement successful high profile creative campaigns, create forward looking policy as well as supporting Liberty's monitoring, evaluation and learning. You will lead our parliamentary engagement; act as a spokesperson in the media; and forge collaborative partnerships for change. You'll be a member of Liberty's Management Team and will have direct line management responsibility for one Policy and Campaigns Manager, three Policy and Campaigns Officers and oversee the current exceptional Policy and Campaigns team of six people.

You might have a campaigning, public affairs or a legal background but we're open to applications from all professional fields. It's likely that you'll have worked in an active social justice or social change organisation. Liberty is striving to build a team that is truly inclusive. We welcome applications from marginalised groups, particularly people of colour, trans and non-binary people, and disabled people. Lived experience of Liberty's campaigns and core issues is always valued. Your potential to grow in the role is important to us, so even if you don't have all of what we are asking for, we want to hear from you.

We asked the current team what qualities they would most like to see in the new Head of Policy and Campaigns. They told us they want someone who leads by example, is collegiate, trusts and demonstrate respect for their colleagues, is value driven, strategic, a strong communicator and supportive of those they manage. If you think this is you, we look forward to hearing from you.
