Welcome

Thank you for your interest in learning more about Tullie. We are a regional museum and art gallery in Carlisle that punches above its weight. We are a registered charity with a trading company subsidiary. We lead a Cumbrian Museum Consortium as an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

Nine years ago, Tullie adopted a ground-breaking manifesto and then a 'futureplan' to transform the museum with key objectives to achieve long-term financial sustainability and greater community engagement. To deliver this transformation, £13m has been raised to date from public and private funds, and the first two (£6m) project phases completed on budget.

Phase 3 (£7m) is now underway and will deliver a radical approach to the way that visitors engage with the museum's wide-ranging and extensive collections.

The museum's ambitious programme has excited regional interest and its exhibitions have received national acclaim. Our community support and educational programmes reach many diverse local communities and are in ever growing demand.

We are now looking to appoint up to four new trustees who have the skills and experience we need to ensure that the museum continues to deliver its manifesto and a successful transformation and to shape our work through a diverse range of outlooks and experiences.

I hope that after reading this information pack you will be inspired to apply to be a trustee and help us as we continue to build an inclusive, intriguing and well-loved cultural hub in the heart of Carlisle.

How much do charity CEOs get paid? The short answer is that although charity leaders tend to earn considerably less than their commercial counterparts, pay still varies enormously, depending on factors like the size and complexity of the charity's operations, its annual income, and the scale of the challenge facing the incoming CEO.

Say you work in finance and many will imagine a world of six-figure salaries, baffling spreadsheets, detached houses in the Home Counties and a statistically inexplicable number of people called Steve. Working in charity finance however, is – baffling spreadsheets aside – a rather different story, but with their finger on the pulse and their ear to the ground at all times (we should really get them some chairs), our finance specialists are perfectly placed to bring you up to speed on the latest twists and turns. Here’s what they had to say about remuneration and recruitment trends in the current market, in our 2025 Salary Survey .
