Human Resources Manager

Harris Hill is delighted to be supporting Helen & Douglas House exclusively in the search for its new HR Manager. Helen & Douglas House is a wonderful charity providing specialist hospice care for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions, as well as support for their families. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced HR professional to take a leading role in delivering a high-quality, responsive HR service, supporting managers and colleagues across the organisation and contributing to a meaningful cause.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis, with a hybrid working arrangement based at Helen & Douglas House in Oxford. There is flexibility around how you organise your working week and when you work from the office; however, regular weekly attendance is essential, with a preference for at least two days per week on site.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, Operations and Improvement, you will lead the day-to-day HR function, managing a small team comprising yourself and a Senior HR Advisor. This is a hands-on, operational role with considerable responsibility and scope. You will independently manage complex employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, capability and absence cases, while advising and coaching managers through challenging people situations. You will also lead the HR aspects of organisational change, including restructures, redundancy consultations and contractual changes. Other key responsibilities include overseeing recruitment and safer recruitment compliance, managing payroll inputs and annual pay reviews, developing and maintaining HR policies and procedures, and ensuring compliance with employment legislation. You will also take ownership of HR systems, data and workforce reporting, identify opportunities to improve processes through automation and AI, and build managers' confidence and capability in handling everyday people matters.

To be successful, you will be an experienced and confident HR generalist with substantial experience managing employee relations cases independently from start to finish, alongside experience delivering the HR aspects of organisational change. You will have a sound working knowledge of UK employment law, experience overseeing payroll processes and resolving pay queries, and the ability to supervise, support or lead others. You will be comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment, managing competing priorities and making sound decisions with a high degree of autonomy. You should also be confident using HR systems, Excel and reporting tools, with an interest in making effective and responsible use of automation and AI. Above all, you will bring emotional resilience, empathy and professionalism, recognising the sensitive nature of the environment in which Helen & Douglas House operates. Experience within the charity, healthcare or another regulated setting would be advantageous, but candidates from all sectors are welcome to apply.

To apply, please submit your up-to-date CV by 18 November at 23:59. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit a tailored cover letter after reviewing the full job description.

Please note that only applicants with an unrestricted right to work in the UK will be considered for this position.

Please note, only successful applicants will be contacted with further information.

As a leading charity recruitment specialist and a certified B Corp™, Harris Hill is committed to high and ever-improving standards of equitable and inclusive recruitment. We actively welcome applications from all sections of the community regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion, sexuality and other protected characteristics.
