Chair

Job description

The Donkey Sanctuary Chair to the Board of Trustees
Location: Sidmouth, Devon
Remuneration: Unremunerated

Since its foundation almost 50 years ago, The Donkey Sanctuary has grown from a Devon-based charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse to an international animal welfare organisation transforming the lives of millions of donkeys and mules, and the people who depend on them for their livelihood.

Today we have 10 sanctuaries around the UK and Europe, and we have delivered veterinary, welfare and educational programmes in almost 40 countries around the world, reaching donkeys and mules most in need. Our aim is to help many more of the millions of donkeys and mules worldwide through field projects, research and advocacy, promoting lasting collaborations with communities, partner NGO's, governments, the media and the public.

We are now searching for a Trustee to become our elected Chair to provide effective leadership to the Board, as well as to work in Partnership with the CEO and Company Secretary to ensure that Trustee decisions are acted upon and that The Donkey Sanctuary Board is managed effectively. We are already one of the world's largest equine welfare charities and, as we continue our ambitious five-year strategy (2019-2023), it is an incredibly exciting time to join our Board.

The successful candidate will have experience at Board/Committee level and be able to demonstrate previous good chairing skills. You will need to be a strategic thinker with strong communication skills and be able to provide evidence of leadership of an organisation of a similar size to The Donkey Sanctuary.

We are looking for a person of integrity with a strong commitment to our aims and values, who is collaborative in approach. In return you will be joining a Board with a genuine desire to make a difference.

The role of Chair is a voluntary, unpaid, non-executive appointment but reasonable travel and other expenses incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed. The role requires a commitment of approximately two days per month, with the capacity to flex upwards should the need arise.
