Chelsea Physic Garden is London's oldest botanic garden and contains a unique living collection of around 5,000 different edible, useful and medicinal plants that have changed the world.

First established as the Apothecaries' Garden in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries to grow plants to be used as medicines. This four-acre physic garden, the term referring to the science of healing, is among the oldest botanical gardens in Britain, after Oxford founded in 1621 and Edinburgh in 1670.

Our rock garden is the oldest English garden devoted to alpine plants, and we are home to the largest fruiting olive tree in Britain and what is doubtless the world's northernmost grapefruit growing outdoors. Jealously guarded during the tenure of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, this Grade 1 listed Garden of Special Historic Interest became in 1983 an independent registered charity and was opened to the general public for the first time.

Chelsea Physic Garden, Commercial Director, £42,000 to £45,000 per annum

Following a review of the senior management team structure in 2018 the Head of Marketing and Commercial was replaced by the new role of Commercial Director, with responsibility for income generation associated with the Chelsea Physic Gardens commercial activities, the development of the Friends Scheme and for the overall promotion of the Garden.

We are also at a particularly exciting time in the development and evolution of the Garden, in a period of large scale project development and implementation and a supporting major fundraising appeal launched to restore, refurbish and re-present the listed Garden and its supporting Glasshouses and buildings as it moves toward a celebration of its 350 anniversary in 2023.

With the role of Commercial Director prominent comes responsibility for ensuring that the commercial opportunities that are or may become available to the Garden are considered and taken to ensure that the Garden's charitable activities and aims can be executed. This will also encompass leveraging the commercial opportunities presented by the National Lottery Heritage Fund supported Glasshouse Restoration and Reinterpretation project.
