Interim HR Director

Job description

Interim HR Director
3 - 6 month contract, immediate start
70,000 pro rata, or equivalent day rate
Berkshire / flexible / homeworking

My client is an established charity focused on a genetic condition that affects 5,000 people and their families in the UK and 500,000 worldwide. The charity funds pioneering research into a cure and in the meanwhile, better treatments, as well as providing care and support to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. The charity is a lifeline, as even in its mildest form, the condition causes huge suffering that affects people's everyday lives.

There are just under 400 employees, most of whom are in the retail function that funds much of the work, as well as 800 volunteers. A goal is to double this latter number.

The charity is in the process of reviewing and updating its HR policies with external consultants, but much work needs to be done to ensure the resulting policies are bespoke to the unique needs of the organisation and its diverse teams. There is also a complete terms and conditions review in progress, and a move to using a self-service system for HR. Meanwhile, the retail team is furloughed in lockdown, and this scheme (and coming out of it) needs careful oversight.

While the HR Director is away due to sickness, there is a need to keep momentum and drive these vital projects forward. The Interim HR Director will be a key part of the SMT, and play a transformational role in the policies, processes, systems and most importantly culture of the charity, allowing it to more effectively deliver for the community it supports.

The Interim HR Director will need:

  • The ability to start in the role ASAP
  • Significant experience of transformational leadership in HR functions within organisations of comparable scale and complexity (in any sector)
  • The ability to balance strategic and operational priorities
  • A strong alignment with the values of the charity, and willingness to develop and promote these
  • High level of emotional intelligence
  • Preferably, CIPD qualified

We encourage applicants who are from underrepresented groups with protected characteristics, as we value having a diverse pool of applicants to find the best candidate.
