U3A Magazine Editor, Third Age Matters (“TAM”)

Harris Hill are proud to be partnering with the U3A (legal name “University of the Third Age”) to help recruit their TAM Editor.

What is U3A?

U3A is a UK movement of retired and semi-retired people who come together to continue their educational, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment. The Third Age Trust (the “Trust”) works to support the national network of over 1.000 U3As.

Founded nearly 40 years ago, U3A has over 400,000 active members with approximately 15 new U3As opening every year. They pursue an amazing range of topics, some academic, some more practical and others recreational.

With a National Office near London Bridge the Trust boasts a small dedicated team. They enjoy a culture of collaboration and are very committed to influence, inform and engage with Third Agers.

How will the Magazine Editor contribute to raising the profile of, and developing, the U3A movement?

TAM is the main communication channel between the Trust and its members. As Editor you will produce annually five 92 page issues delivered to 250,000 subscribers. The magazine content is sourced from U3A members and collated and edited by the Editor. The membership provide a wealth of stories and your role will be to find the most informative, stimulating and unusual ones for inclusion in the magazine.

The role, which will be overseen by the Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, will be to lead on the direction and creation of the magazine. In addition to the wealth of material, there will be the opportunity to influence the content of an established (but open to new ideas) magazine for which there is strong advertising demand (approximately, 40% of the magazine).

What are the qualities the Trust are looking for in the Editor?

A proven journalistic experience, as an editor or sub-editor, gained on newspapers, magazines, other media outlets, communications, etc, as well as evidence of editing and creating engaging material.

The skills to empathise with the interests and requirements of a third age readership.

A self-starter, with previous experience of managing their own workload and delivering to deadlines.

To be able to work across the movement – both with National Office staff and the wider membership. The Trust welcomes the opportunity to hear new ideas that can be brought to this role.

To work closely with the Communications Officer and, as an integral member of the organisation, to build contacts and networks with the wider third age community and membership. 

As a professional designer produces final artwork for the pages, graphic design skills are not essential for the role.

Additional information

The appointment is expected to be on an employed or freelance basis for approximately 30 weeks a year. Although working from the Office may be necessary at times, it is expected that most of the work will be undertaken off site. Exact arrangements will be agreed between the Trust and the successful candidate.

Salary £35,000- £40,000 dependent on experience.
